How to Improve Your WiFi Signal Strength

You may be familiar with the WiFi signal bars on your computer, with 0 to 1 bar being a poor signal and 3 or more bars being considered a strong signal.wifi signal: 2.4ghz network These are actually visual representations of something called RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) on your wireless network. RSSI measures the strength of a signal, and is typically displayed as a decibel milliwatts number (dBm), with negative numbers being more powerful.

Wi-Fi operates on two radio bands, 2.wifi signal: 2.4ghz network 4 gigahertz and 5.8 gigahertz. Each band is subdivided into channels. Devices communicate on different frequencies to avoid interference with each other. This means that if your router and another device both use the same frequency, it would be like trying to share the same walkie-talkie channel, leading to noise and interference. The 2.4 GHz band has fewer channels than the 5 GHz, which makes it more susceptible to this type of interference.

In addition, 2.wifi signal: 2.4ghz network 4 GHz signals are much more likely to travel through walls and other obstacles than the shorter wavelengths of 5 GHz waves. As a result, the 2.4 GHz band can be significantly congested with devices that operate on this frequency. This can lead to slower speeds and connection issues for data-heavy activities such as online gaming and streaming video.

The 2.4 GHz network also tends to be less stable than the 5 GHz network because the signal can more easily drop out or get disrupted. This can cause your web browser or other apps to crash, or it may slow your download speed. Ultimately, the 2.4 GHz network is best suited for simple tasks such as email and social media.

If you want to determine which band your Wi-Fi is using, open your networks panel from the taskbar or click the WiFi icon on your desktop, then right-click and select “Properties”. Look for the "Network Band" setting. It should say 2.4GHz or 5GHz.

There are plenty of reasons you might have a weak WiFi signal, including distance, obstructions or interference from other devices in your home. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help improve your network performance, such as moving or shielding the access point/router or installing a signal repeater or extender.

If you're experiencing low Wi-Fi speeds or connectivity issues, we recommend trying a 2.4ghz network. This lower-frequency option can still provide fast Internet to the devices in your home, even if you have a lot of other electronics on the same band, such as cordless phones, baby monitors or garage door openers. However, for high-bandwidth applications such as online gaming and video streaming, it's best to move to a 5Ghz network to prevent interference from other wireless devices. If you're unsure how to proceed, you can always contact us and we'll be happy to help! Our team of experts is here to guide you through the process and ensure that your new home or business is properly equipped with fast, reliable Wi-Fi.
