How to Improve Your WiFi Signal: 2.4ghz Network and Get Better Speeds

The speed at which WiFi works depends on the frequency of the radio waves it sends and receives.wifi signal: 2.4ghz network 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz are two of the most popular frequencies available for WiFi. While both bands offer a good mix of range and speed, the 2.4 GHz band tends to have more interference than the 5 GHz. There are several things you can do to improve your wifi signal: 2.4ghz network and get better speeds.

The first step is to understand how dBm (decibels relative to milliwatts) signals are measured. The easiest way to think of dBm is that -30 is good and -80 is bad. The higher the number, the stronger the signal.

WiFi works off of the same principal as other wireless devices such as walky talkies and car radios ā€“ they use the same radio frequencies to transmit data between devices. Frequencies are measured in Hertz ā€“ or millions of cycles per second ā€“ or gigahertz, billions. The 2.4 GHz wireless band uses transmission waves that are very similar to those found in your microwave.

Wireless transmissions can be affected by line-of-sight, multipath, reflection, refraction and up and down fade. All of these factors affect the strength and quality of the signal that reaches your devices. The more obstacles between the router and the device, the weaker the signal. The frequency of the wave also affects how far it travels. Higher frequencies such as those used by 5 GHz and 6 GHz, which are exclusive to the newer WiFi standards, can penetrate walls more easily than the shorter transmission waves in the 2.4 GHz band.

One of the most important issues when determining your wifi signal: 2.4ghz is deciding how many devices are sharing the same frequency. When too many devices are on the same channel, they can interfere with each other and slow down your connection. It is best to have a password system in place so that only the people you want on your network can connect to it.

Another consideration is that wireless signals can be reflected or absorbed by objects such as metallic structures, low-e coatings on window glass and rock. The longer the transmission wave travels, the more it will be attenuated by these obstacles.

You can check the quality of your WiFi signal by using a Wi-Fi network analyzer app. A quick search in the Microsoft Store will give you a variety of options. Choose an app with a network graph feature that shows the performance of your wireless signal in different areas of your home or business. This will help you select the best channel for your 2.4 GHz network. Once you have selected the best channel, you can change your WiFi settings on the router. Be sure to test your network performance after making changes ā€“ it can take time for new radio transmissions to propagate through walls. When you are satisfied with the performance of your 2.4 GHz network, you can start connecting more devices and enjoying the benefits of high-speed WiFi.
